Constantine
272-337 A.D.
Constantine assumed his father's position as
one of four
emperors in 306. After a series of battles with rivals, he was sole
emperor of
the Empire in 323. Perhaps his most famous battle was against his rival
Maxentius at the Milvian bridge near Rome in 312; there, legend has it
he saw
the sign of the cross in the sky and had it painted on his soldiers'
shields.
After he won the battle, he converted to Christianity. It was under him
that
Christianity became the principle religion of the
Empire.
